During primary training, I was very fortunate to have learned how to fly using a glass cockpit (G1000s are so much fun). After that, however, I purchase N6684G - my tiny (and very slow) Cessna 150L. To say its been fun has been an understatement, but I was immediately thrust back into the 1900s with steam gauges.
The transition was mostly easy, but keeping on targets were still challenging. Not having an altitude bug, and not having a heading bug to remind me of where I anticipated to sit in the air meant keeping yet another thing in my brain. Also, constantly having to worry that the vacuum system would go one day meant that I decided to save up a bit to install dual G5s.
My avionics shop (Precision Avionics) ordered it for me and put me on the books to have them installed in mid April. Once the plane came back online, I went up for a flight and I can tell you - it is fantastic looking back at glass instead of the round gauges. Now, with a quick glance I can see where I'm supposed to be at any given moment, and the information makes sense again. Does that mean I can't read / fly the round gauges? Of course not! But, it does mean that there are less things that could potentially break, and I am all for that.
All in the cost was around $11,500 to order and have them installed, as well as having my vacuum system removed. Given I am also planning to start my IFR flight training very soon, in my opinion it was well worth the price.
